New audio-only hardware at Meta Connect
Meta demonstrated new smart glasses at its annual Connect event, as reported by TechCrunch writer Lucas Ropek. The company showed an unreleased pair of audio-only smart glasses with six microphones and no camera. Meta built the camera-free model following privacy complaints about surveillance risks on its camera-equipped frames.
The audio glasses integrate with Muse, Meta’s personal agentic system. Wearers give verbal commands to Muse to perform digital tasks like sending emails. Ropek noted that the system got confused and spoke over staff when background conversation occurred.
Glasses for the hearing impaired
Meta also demonstrated an audio-only model for the hearing impaired. A Meta researcher stated the device was in development for five years. The glasses will cost $150, while traditional hearing aids sell for up to $1,600. The device allows users to switch between focused amplification for individual voices and omnidirectional amplification for surrounding sounds.
