Anthropic is operating a lab that conducts biology experiments
By Pradhyuman,
Anthropic operates a wet biology lab in the Bay Area to conduct physical experiments. Eric Kauderer-Abrams, Anthropic’s head of life sciences, told Reuters that real lab work is the final test for biological research. Anthropic stated that the facility focuses on fundamental biology.
In April, Anthropic bought biotech startup Coefficient Bio for a reported $400 million. Anthropic also launched a Life Sciences Verification Program to give vetted researchers access to its models. The company works with external partners and announced a drug discovery project with Novo Nordisk.
The lab exists alongside safety warnings from company staff. Former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon resigned after he warned against self-improving AI. Alignment lead Evan Hubinger estimated a greater than 10% chance that AI could exterminate humanity within ten years, while Chief Executive Dario Amodei identified bioterrorism as a major AI risk.
