Astra and Opus just passed Turing’s other test

Developer Carter Leffen instructed OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra model to find and decode an unsolved World War II Enigma message from a database. The model performed archival research, built an Enigma machine simulator, and decoded a message that was unsolved since 2005. Cryptologist Frode Weierud validated the solution on his website Crypto Cellar. Weierud stated that Astra completed work in two days that would take a human researcher weeks or months.

On September 21, cybersecurity executive Jack Willis used Anthropic's Claude Opus 5 model to break another unsolved Enigma message. Willis guided the model by providing the known signature of a specific officer. Weierud noted that seven unbroken Enigma messages remain, along with one message where the code remains unsolved despite having known plaintext.
