Google DeepMind alumni are building tools to accelerate fusion power for the grid
By Pradhyuman,
Federico Felici and Jonas Buchli founded Lausanne-based Fusionality to build control systems and simulation environments for fusion energy startups. Felici worked at EPFL and Google DeepMind, and Buchli worked at Google DeepMind. The startup raised $3.7 million in pre-seed funding from Founderful and Playfair.
Felici told TechCrunch that fusion companies typically build control hardware and software from scratch, even though 80% of each control system is identical across designs. Fusionality designs modular software and hardware components that startups can adjust for their reactors. The company currently focuses on magnetic confinement fusion, an approach that uses magnetic fields to contain hot plasma.
The company has seven employees. Felici said Fusionality plans to expand its control technology to other types of fusion reactor designs.
