Michael Polansky is training an AI model on skin that’s still alive
By Pradhyuman,
Michael Polansky, the co-founder of Outer Biosciences, has built a startup that keeps living human skin tissue alive outside the body to find skincare ingredients. Polansky said the company has raised 23 million dollars from investors including Wing Ventures, Initialized, and Hawktail.
The tissue testing process
Polansky said the company obtains discarded human skin from surgeries through biobanks. A system feeds the tissue nutrients to keep it alive for up to a month. Polansky explained that the company uses an artificial intelligence model to predict which chemicals will affect skin function. Researchers test these chemicals on the living tissue and send the results back to the model to improve future predictions. The company plans to license its ingredients to beauty and pharmaceutical brands.
