OpenAI forms math advisory group as its AI resolves more than 100 open problems

By Pradhyuman,

OpenAI announced the creation of the Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. OpenAI stated the group gives mathematicians direct input into its mathematical research. The announcement follows OpenAI's publication of a solution to the Navier-Stokes Millennium Prize problem. OpenAI stated its internal AI model also resolved more than 100 open problems in mathematics.

Earlier this month, 25 Fields Medal winners signed an open letter stating AI labs threaten their intellectual work. OpenAI named nine mathematicians to the new advisory group. Only one member, Camillo De Lellis, signed the Fields Medalists' letter. The group members are unpaid and can publish their views independently. OpenAI stated the group will not advise the company on how to pace its research. The Institute for Advanced Study stated it holds no decision-making power over company operations.
