OpenAI adds a prominent AI doomer to its board of directors

By Pradhyuman,

AI researcher Paul Christiano joined the board of directors for the OpenAI Foundation, according to reporting from TechCrunch. Christiano worked at OpenAI until 2021, where he helped develop reinforcement learning from human feedback. He later founded the Alignment Research Center to study AI safety risks.

Christiano will join OpenAI’s Safety and Security Committee, which holds final approval over model releases. In a social media post, Christiano wrote that rapid acceleration in AI capabilities creates a risk of "catastrophic and irreversible loss of control in the very near term." He stated that OpenAI and the broader industry are not on track to reduce this risk to an acceptable level.

Christiano also advises the U.S. Center for AI Standards and Innovation on model evaluations. OpenAI stated that he will recuse himself from OpenAI evaluations in his government role.
