Nevada approves robotaxi permits for three companies
The Nevada Transportation Authority approved permits for Tesla, Uber, and Waymo to run commercial robotaxi services in Clark County. The approvals allow the deployment of up to 8,000 autonomous vehicles over the next year.
Tesla received approval for up to 5,000 robotaxis. Waymo and Uber each received approval for up to 1,000 vehicles. Uber will operate its vehicles through partnerships with Motional and Zoox. Eric Early, the chief engineer for Tesla's Cybercab, stated that the company will likely not deploy the full 5,000 vehicles within the next year. Early said Tesla aims to deploy 2,500 vehicles.
Kimberly Maxson-Rushton, a lawyer representing the Livery Operators Association, opposed the approvals. Maxson-Rushton stated at the hearing that the permits cause concerns about road overcrowding and industry oversaturation.
